Origin

Argan oil is a traditional oil from Morocco, which is obtained from the seeds of the ripe fruits of the argan tree. The trees, which have been in existence for over 80 million years, thrive exclusively in a small area in the southwest of Morocco and are subject to strict nature conservation. For the Berber people from the region, the argan trees are an important part of their culture. They have been using the oil obtained from them for thousands of years and are aware of its inestimable value. In 1998, the areas were declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and the centuries-old knowledge and practices of using the tree and its fruits were recognised as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2014. Due to the small population and the protection of the trees, argan oil is highly sought after and is also referred to as the “Gold of Morocco”.

Production

After the harvest, the fruits of the argan tree, collected by hand, are dried in the sun and then stored. The fruits of the contain an extremely hard nut, which in turn contains about 3 seeds from which the oil is pressed. These kernels are exposed in laborious manual work. First the nut is loosened from the fruit. Then the hard shell of the nut must be cracked between stones in order to get to the valuable kernels from which the argan oil is finally extracted. This traditional processing requires more than 15 working hours to produce one litre of argan oil. Therefore extreme caution is necessary with the purchase of argan oil, which is offered to a clearly smaller price. Most certainly this wouldn’t be pure argan oil, but a mixed product. The very labour-intensive task of harvesting and opening the nuts is carried out by Moroccan women, who have organised themselves into cooperatives in order to contribute to the living of their families by producing argan oil.
